Inca Trail 1 Day to Machu Picchu — Sun Gate hike

About This Tour

The Inca Trail 1 Day to Machu Picchu is the perfect choice for travelers with limited time who still want the authentic experience of walking the original Inca path and entering Machu Picchu through the legendary Sun Gate (Inti Punku). In a single unforgettable day you'll cover roughly 12 km (7.5 miles) of breathtaking Andean cloud forest, ending with a private guided tour of the lost city of the Incas at sunset — when crowds thin out and the light turns golden.

Your day starts before dawn in Cusco. After a private transfer to Ollantaytambo train station, you board the tourist Expedition train for a scenic ride to Km 104 (Chachabamba), the start of the trek. From here a professional bilingual guide leads you up the original Inca trail through cloud forest filled with bromeliads, orchids and tree ferns, past riverside ruins and a stunning waterfall, then on to the spectacular agricultural terraces of Wiñay Wayna ("Forever Young") — possibly the most beautiful Inca site on the entire trail.

The final stretch is the iconic Inca stone stairway up to Inti Punku, the Sun Gate — the original Inca entrance to Machu Picchu. From here you'll have your first stunning view of the citadel below, exactly the same arrival the four-day trekkers experience. You then descend into Machu Picchu itself for a full guided tour and a magical sunset before returning to Cusco the same evening.

Why choose this tour? Because you don't have 4 days for the Classic Inca Trail, but you absolutely refuse to skip the Sun Gate experience. Because you want to walk the original Inca path, not just visit Machu Picchu by train. And because the late afternoon visit means smaller crowds and the most spectacular light of the day for photos.

⚠ Permits required. Like all Inca Trail routes, this tour requires a government-issued permit from SERNANP, purchased in your name with your passport details. Permits are limited and can sell out 2–3 months in advance for high season (May–September). Contact us via WhatsApp to check 2026 availability.

Detailed Itinerary

(B) = Breakfast · (L) = Lunch · (D) = Dinner

Day 1

Cusco → Ollantaytambo → Km 104 → Wiñay Wayna → Sun Gate → Machu Picchu → Cusco (L, D)

4:00 a.m. — Pre-dawn pickup from your hotel in Cusco. Private transfer to Ollantaytambo train station (about 2 hours).

6:10 a.m. — Tourist Expedition train departs Ollantaytambo. About 1h 45m of spectacular Sacred Valley scenery as the Vilcanota River and Andean peaks roll past.

~7:30 a.m. — Arrival at Km 104 (Chachabamba). Show your original passport at the SERNANP control point, cross the bridge over the Vilcanota River, and the trek begins. Your guide is waiting on the platform with a box lunch.

Morning trek (4–5 hours): The trail heads first to the riverside ruins of Chachabamba — a small ceremonial site with a stone solar altar — then turns south and starts climbing the mountainside. You'll hike approximately 3 hours up through high Andean grassland, then descend briefly into shaded cloud forest where you'll pass a beautiful waterfall. Soon after, the trail opens onto the lower terraces of Wiñay Wayna — possibly the most stunning Inca site you'll see on any short trail, an entire city of agricultural terraces, ceremonial baths and stone houses clinging to a near-vertical mountainside.

Lunch at Wiñay Wayna: Take time at the ruins, eat your box lunch, refill water, and prepare for the final push.

Sun Gate ascent: Continue along the original Inca path through cloud forest filled with bromeliads, orchids, and tree ferns. The final stretch is the iconic 60+ stone steps up to Inti Punku, the Sun Gate (2,720 m) — the original Inca entrance to Machu Picchu. From here you have your first magical view of the citadel below, exactly the same arrival the four-day trekkers experience.

~2:00 p.m. — Descend from the Sun Gate into Machu Picchu. Full guided tour of the citadel under Circuit 2 (Classic route): Sun Temple, Sacred Plaza, Intihuatana stone, royal precincts, agricultural terraces. Approximately 2 hours.

Late afternoon: Free time inside the citadel. This is the best part — by this hour the day-trippers from Cusco have already left, the light turns golden, and you'll have Machu Picchu nearly to yourself for the most spectacular photos of the day.

5:30 p.m. — Bus down to Aguas Calientes. Quick dinner at a local restaurant (included).

~6:20 p.m. — Tourist train Aguas Calientes → Ollantaytambo, then private transfer back to Cusco.

~10:30 p.m. — Drop-off at your Cusco hotel. End of services.

  • Waterproof jacket + pants: Andean weather is unpredictable. A good rain shell is essential year-round.
  • Sun hat + warm hat: The sun at altitude is intense; nights drop to near-freezing.
  • Sunglasses + sunscreen (SPF 50+): UV at 4,000 m is brutal — protect skin and eyes.

⚠ Remember: Andean weather can change quickly — be prepared for both bright sun at altitude and sudden rain showers, even in the dry season.
